DENON CEOL RCDN& BLACK

The Denon CEOL, RCD-N7 brings together Denon's long-standing expertise in mini hi-fi with the latest technology.

What we love most about the Denon is that, whatever the format, the RCD-N7 won't just play it, it will play it well. Key to the CEOL's main appeal is its built-in wireless connectivity with WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup). Use this or a wired Ethernet to connect to your home network and you can effortlessly stream music from your PC, laptop or NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive. Internet radio is also on hand with a choice of over 15,000 stations available including support for the popular Last.fm and Napster music services. With an optional cost upgrade you can also use the RCD-N7 to receive music from your Apple iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad via Apple's AirPlay, wireless music transmission system.

It's not just the wireless networking that makes this Denon impressively connected, either. Up top you'll also find an iPod/iPhone dock with digital transmission, for the highest quality sound. Up front there's a USB socket. This FAT16 and FAT32 compatible socket works with a wide range of stored audio and is ideal for connecting up an MP3 player and USB storage device. Other sources include the more usual CD player and FM/AM tuner.

The superb flexibility of this mini hi-fi system continues with the socketry array. There are twin analogue inputs at the back and a mini jack at the front. There's also an optical digital input and outputs for both analogue source and subwoofer. Finally, the speaker binding posts are quality 4mm binding posts that are well able to take thick cables.

Despite the many options for listening to music, the RCD-N7 remains easy to use. An Apple app is available for your iPhone or iPod Touch for ease of control or you can use the standard remote and large, clear display. A network wizard makes it easy to set-up and Denon have done as much as possible to make the RCD-N7 very much a PnP (Plug n' Play) component.

Amongst all the interest in the look and connectivity of the CEOL, it's easy to forget that it's also an exceptionally good sounding mini hi-fi! Integrating components used in their full size units into this mini has meant near full size sound quality. Thanks to short signal paths, the sound is clear and detailed with very little distortion. The ample power supply produces a room-filling 65 watts per channel (at 4 ohms) for strong dynamics and a powerful bass. In short, the RCD-N7 is still one of the best sounding mini hi-fi systems in its class.

When one of Scandinavia's premium loudspeaker manufacturers puts their mind to making a class-leading budget speaker, there's a fair chance that it's going to be pretty good but, with the Dali Zensor 1 it's better than that. Much, much better in fact! With rave reviews from across the world's hi-fi press, the Dali Zensor One is very much a top contender. Take a look at the construction components and it's not hard to see why.

Key to the Zensor's detailed yet refined and powerful yet tuneful sound quality is the bespoke wood fibre bass woofer. Of a design usually reserved for their more expensive models, the Zensor 1's bass cone gives a dynamic and precise sound that you'd usually expect to find from far more expensive speakers. Partnering this impressive bass unit is a similarly high performing treble unit. Soft dome construction gives upper notes a smooth yet precise sound. When taken as a whole the Zensor One is simply one of the most realistic sounding speakers at its price point.

Despite its budget price, the Zensor 1 is none too shabbily constructed, either. The solid cabinet has an attractive glossy front baffle, with recessed drive units for a smoother style. Thanks to the integrated wall bracket, it's practical too. Combined with its compact size, the bracket makes the Zensor 1 ideal as an AV satellite speaker as well as a quality stereo one.

Neat and stylish, engaging to listen to and affordable. Not for nothing has the Zensor won so many awards - prepare to be impressed!
