"An excellent entry-level turntable that gets all the basics spot-on. It makes listening to records fun, and we can't ask for more than that." What Hi-Fi? Sound & Vision magazine. Best turntable up to £400
Genuine hi-fi turntable Unlike many other turntables around this price, the Pro-Ject Essential 2 has all the elements of a proper hi-fi turntable - just at a lower price. The deck has a new motor control making it quieter and minimises unwanted vibrations. The main bearing is made from stainless steel and runs within a bronze bushing with a Teflon coating. This type of build integrity is usually reserved for much more expensive designs and gives the Essential 2 a remarkable precision of sound.
Single piece aluminium tone-arm Continuing its hi-fi credentials, the Pro-Ject Essential II is supplied with a good quality tone-arm. Made from a single piece of aluminium, it's both light and rigid. The more rigid the more precisely it tracks, making listening to your records a more involving experience. For long-lasting quality, the tone-arm is fitted with sapphire bearings.
Factory-fitted Ortofon cartridge The final flourish to this turntable is the inclusion of an Ortofon OM5e cartridge. Usually valued at over £50 on its own, it's a fantastic bonus to have this bundled in with the turntable. Its elliptical shaped stylus provides a balanced and distortion-free sound that's also kind to your records in terms of its low wear rate.
A design classic In a classic case of form following function, the Project Essential 2 offers effortless style through its pared down minimalism. To emphasize the style statement, you can now order the Essential 2 in red or white as well as the more traditional black.
Essential in both name and nature, the Pro-Ject Essential 2 has everything you need to enjoy your records.
Does it feature an onboard phono stage? Allows the turntable to be plugged into an amp without a phono input
Does it have a USB output? This allows the turntable to be plugged directly into a computer - allowing for easy copying from vinyl to the computer's hard drive. Output may only be compatible with PC or Mac.

Decent turntable for newbies to vinylGood turntable but a bit on the light and flimsy side. Great for the price.

This is turntable is utter rubbish. The bear runs around the edge of the turntable, whenever a record is removed from the turntable the belt comes of. Design is woefully amateur.

Great quality and soundAfter searching for hours about something I knew nothing about I found this little beauty. I read all the reviews and it sounded perfect for what I wanted. I knew nothing about record players so the reviews really helped. The price for this is nothing considering the quality you get. I would highly recommend it. The only thing i was unsure about was what I had to buy alongside it. In the end I bought a preamp and cables to hook it up to my existing speakers on my hifi system, works perfectly!

Fantastic Deck at Superb PriceI was bought this as a birthday present around 3 years ago. Had no problem setting up, but then I am used to vinyl decks, having owned several over the years, and worked in hi-fi shops as a kid.
My only complaint is that, being quite lightweight, it does slip around, but a bit of blu-tack carefully applied to the feet helps a lot.
The exposed belt is a bit tricky when you first use it, but you get used to that, part of the the trick is never to put on or take off a record with the turntable moving!
My favourite thing about this deck though, is the arm, which sails effortlessly into the end of a side with no break-up at all, no tracking problems whatsoever, even on some horrible cuts (last minute of "South Side of the Sky" by Yes from "Fragile", for example, which sounds grisly on 99% of decks).
Negligible wow and flutter, minimal motor noise, and bang on 33.3 rpm, unlike my last Thorens, which did 34+, and offended my somewhat perfect pitch no end.

Stylish, cheap, great soundAn excellent turntable, aesthetically beautiful and modern, professional sound. However, the exposed belt can often fall of when chaging the record, which can be very troublesome putting back on, especially at a party. I do wonder if the exposed belt was done for aesthetic purposes or cheapness. Either way, if they have cut corners to lower the price, they have not done so by reducing the quality of the sound. At this price, i would recommend it.

First turntable for nearly 20 yearsOk so I decided I needed a turntable after selling off my Q Deck and Thorens tables when vinyl died....mistake.
In short why buy an unknown quantity second hand when at this price point you can have an excellent turntable?
Ok so build quality is not the best but then it's not the thick end of £500. It's now coupled with my ageing Cyrus amp (as it has a phono stage) and to be brutal it's a great piece of kit.
Some care in setting up needed but nothing too difficult. Perhaps a little noisy electrically from the interconnect (static earth hum) but unless you've got it up loud it's not a bother
The included Ortofon cartridge is also good at this price level
Certainly would give my Thorens a run out for the money musically. Embarrassingly I can hear parts of the music I've not heard previous.
Don't doubt this deck at this price. You could do much much worse.

SEVENNot having bought any stereo equipment for a few years I enquired as to what I could afford as my budget was tight. The salesperson was extremely helpful at Richer Sounds. As I wanted to start playing my old vinyl albums again I purchased the Project essential 2. Not being very techo I did have a problem setting it up correctly. I think I have done it correctly now , but I do find that it is very sensitive & delicately balanced. Not a robust piece of kit . Sound wise though - excellent for the price.
